Vintage 2018 · Menghai, Yunnan · Da Shu Shou Pu-erh

Menghai is considered the heartland of Shou production among Pu-erh connoisseurs. It was here in the 1970s that the modern fermentation process was developed, and it is here that the benchmark for all other Shou regions is set. This cake originates from precisely this tradition — and uses Da Shu material, i.e., leaves from larger, older tea trees. Da Shu is the sweet spot of the Pu-erh world: significantly more complex and mineral-rich than ordinary plantation material, but without the price premium that Gu Shu entails. Those seeking character and depth without falling into collector's prices will find their piece here.

When brewed, it reveals a dense, ruby-red at the rim, deep dark in the center brew — it immediately becomes clear that mature material is in the cup. The taste is the real surprise: creamy and strikingly mild, with clear notes of sweet pastry and a warm oak wood note, carried by a calm, round sweetness. The texture is silky and "creams the tongue," as tasters describe it — a quality that only material with several years of maturity provides. It drinks easily without being flat. Consistent over many infusions, without ever tipping into bitterness.

For all those looking for an honest, everyday Shou — with real character, without collector's price. And for all those who want to get to know Da Shu as a conscious step between plantation tea and Gu Shu.

Tasting Notes

  • Infusion: Ruby red at the rim, deep dark in the center — dense, silky and mouth-filling.
  • Taste: Creamy, sweet and mild, with notes of sweet pastry and warm oak.
  • Aroma: Sweet pastry with a fine, barely perceptible fermentation note.
  • Perfect for: Everyday enjoyment with sophistication — and for drinkers who want to explore Da Shu between plantation and Gu Shu.
  • Effect: Grounding, warming, calmly invigorating.

Preparation

Rinse twice for 5 seconds before steeping. Stir before pouring. Steep 4 grams in 300 ml of water at 95 °C for 2 minutes. Suitable for multiple infusions — extend each subsequent infusion by 30–60 seconds, depending on taste. Best enjoyed in the morning or afternoon.

Packaging & Storage

100 g, compressed. Shipped in three-layer protective packaging — ideal for aroma protection during shipping and for long-term storage at home. This keeps the tea aroma-stable and allows it to continue maturing into your personal vintage over the next few years.

Velvety, dark, sweet – why our Shou Pu‑erh is irresistible

Shou Pu‑erh is our “comfort tea”: dark, velvety, and surprisingly smooth—like a walk through the forest after rain, just in a cup. Instead of bitterness, you get a rounded, earthy warmth, a natural sweetness reminiscent of dates, cocoa, and brown sugar, and a texture that feels almost creamy.
Our Shou teas come directly from Yunnan, are cleanly fermented, and carefully selected to be easy to love and hard to put down: perfect as a deep morning cup or after a heavy meal. If you want to understand why Pu‑erh fans call it “liquid comfort,” this is where you begin.
