Tea Advent Calendar 2026: 24 Days of Chinese Tea Instead of Tea Bags

Summary

How to spot a good tea advent calendar, what is behind our 24 doors, how to brew each tea and the order deadline for delivery before 1 December.

Contents

A tea advent calendar sits on almost every supermarket shelf: 24 bags, usually flavoured fruit or herbal tea, done in two minutes. If you drink loose-leaf tea, that rarely satisfies. This article shows you how to recognise a good tea advent calendar, what is inside our calendar of 24 Chinese teas, how to brew each door properly and when to order so it arrives before 1 December.

How to recognise a good tea advent calendar

Five criteria separate a calendar you still enjoy opening on 24 December from one that disappears into a cupboard after day 6:

    1. Loose leaf instead of bags. A bag usually holds 1.5–2 g of fine dust for a single steep. Loose leaf can be brewed several times and shows a different side in each infusion.
    2. Real tea types instead of flavours. "Winter Magic" or "Baked Apple" are flavourings, not teas. A good calendar names the variety, the region and ideally the year.
    3. Variety of tea categories. White, green, yellow, oolong, black, pu-erh and dark tea taste fundamentally different. A calendar with 24 black-tea blends is not a journey of discovery.
    4. A proper portion. Under 3 g is barely enough for a gongfu session. 5 g per door gives 5–15 infusions depending on the tea.
    5. Brewing parameters for every tea. Yellow tea wants 85 °C, shou pu-erh 95 °C. Without instructions, the most expensive tea gets brewed bitter.

Hold this list against the calendars of the big brands and you find almost only bag and flavour calendars. That gap is exactly why we made our own.

What is inside the Arteamony tea advent calendar

Open tea advent calendar with 24 compartments: loose teas, mini tea cakes, pyramid bag and drip bag

24 doors, 24 different Chinese teas, seven tea categories. No tea appears twice and none is artificially flavoured – where blossoms or mandarin are involved, they are real. An overview of the collection:

    • White tea: Pai Mu Tan, aged white tea with honeysuckle, hand-rolled dragon pearls with rose.
    • Green and yellow tea: Longjing, Anji Bai Cha, jasmine tea, matcha for whisking and a rare yellow tea from Yunnan.
    • Oolong: Dancong with orchid fragrance, Da Hong Pao from the Wuyi cliffs, pressed Zhangping Shuixian and an oolong in a drip bag.
    • Black tea: Golden Bud Dianhong, Jin Jun Mei, classic Dianhong, Sui Yin Zi and a coffee-rose blend.
    • Pu-erh and dark tea: a mini brick of raw sheng, shou as a mini tuo, in a mandarin peel (Xiao Qing Gan), scented with jasmine, in a pyramid bag, plus a piece of Anhua Qianliang tea.

Do the maths: 24 portions of about 5 g, 15 of them made for gongfu brewing with 5–15 infusions. That is more than 100 cups of tea before Christmas – from one box that lies flat on a shelf.

Every tea comes with a flavour card: six axes (freshness, sweetness, body, astringency, bitterness, aroma complexity), the main aromas as pictures and the brewing values. Ten seconds in the morning and you know what to expect.

The sequence: from light to bold

The order of the doors is not random. The first days start light with white tea and a young sheng so the palate can tune in. From the second week, green tea, oolong and pu-erh alternate so that no two similar teas follow each other. Three doors are placed deliberately:

    • St Nicholas (day 6): hand-rolled white dragon pearls with rose fragrance – the first "wow" moment.
    • Halfway (day 12): yellow tea from Yunnan. Yellow tea is the rarest of the six tea categories; most tea drinkers have never tried it. We explain what makes it special in our article on yellow tea.
    • Final week (days 15–19): Da Hong Pao, jasmine-scented shou, Golden Bud Dianhong, Sui Yin Zi and Jin Jun Mei – the boldest and most complex teas in the box.

On 24 December, Anji Bai Cha closes the calendar: a rare green tea with bamboo-leaf freshness and umami, deliberately light so the evening ends calmly.

    How to brew the doors

You don't need a full gongfu set. Two methods work with every tea in the calendar:

    • Short and often (gongfu): 5 g in a gaiwan or a small pot with 150 ml, steep 5–20 seconds, pour off, repeat. This is how the values on the flavour cards are given. Our comparison gaiwan vs. teapot explains the details.
    • Long and once (Western): 3–4 g per 250 ml, 1–3 minutes. Good for a morning at the office. The green and black tea doors are designed for this; pu-erh and oolong lose some depth.

Three special cases: the matcha on day 8 is sifted and whisked with water under 85 °C – see our guide to preparing matcha. The drip bag on day 13 hangs over the cup and is poured through slowly. The pu-erh portions (mini brick, tuo, mandarin) get a quick rinse with hot water before the first infusion; more in our pu-erh brewing guide.

Water temperature is the biggest lever: 85 °C for yellow and green tea, 90 °C for black tea and Da Hong Pao, 95 °C for white tea, pu-erh and Dancong. No thermometer? Let boiling water stand for two to three minutes.

Who the calendar is for – and who it is not for

    It suits you if you:

    • drink loose-leaf tea or want to start, and want an overview of the Chinese tea categories,
    • need a gift for someone who "already has everything" – tea is consumable, personal and not a third candle,
    • want a daily Advent ritual that takes ten minutes and has nothing to do with your phone.

It is not for you if you are looking for caffeine-free tea. All 24 teas come from the tea plant and contain caffeine, from little (aged white tea) to strong (matcha, Jin Jun Mei). For the evening, the shou pu-erh doors are the gentlest choice; which teas work at night in general is covered in tea for sleep.

    When to order

Detail of the tea advent calendar box with golden numbers on a dark green pattern

According to Google search data, demand for tea advent calendars rises sixfold between September and November and collapses after 1 December. Our calendar is produced in a fixed quantity and not restocked. Two dates to remember:

    • Order by 20 November so the box arrives safely before 1 December with standard shipping.
    • For a gift with a detour (to you first, then onwards) allow one extra week.

Shipping within Germany, Austria and Switzerland is free from €60. Stored dry and away from light, the 24 teas keep well beyond winter – in case you save a few doors for January. Tips in storing tea properly.

    Conclusion

A tea advent calendar is worth it when it shows you a real tea every day that you would not otherwise have tried. 24 loose Chinese teas from seven categories, each with a flavour card and brewing values, arranged from light to bold – that is the difference from a bag calendar.
