Vintage 2018 · Menghai, Yunnan · Da Shu Shou Pu-erh
Menghai is considered the heartland of Shou production among Pu-erh connoisseurs. It was here in the 1970s that the modern fermentation process was developed, and it is here that the benchmark for all other Shou regions is set. This cake originates from precisely this tradition — and uses Da Shu material, i.e., leaves from larger, older tea trees. Da Shu is the sweet spot of the Pu-erh world: significantly more complex and mineral-rich than ordinary plantation material, but without the price premium that Gu Shu entails. Those seeking character and depth without falling into collector's prices will find their piece here.
When brewed, it reveals a dense, ruby-red at the rim, deep dark in the center brew — it immediately becomes clear that mature material is in the cup. The taste is the real surprise: creamy and strikingly mild, with clear notes of sweet pastry and a warm oak wood note, carried by a calm, round sweetness. The texture is silky and "creams the tongue," as tasters describe it — a quality that only material with several years of maturity provides. It drinks easily without being flat. Consistent over many infusions, without ever tipping into bitterness.
For all those looking for an honest, everyday Shou — with real character, without collector's price. And for all those who want to get to know Da Shu as a conscious step between plantation tea and Gu Shu.
