This box is especially easy to use. The leaf teas are already pressed into mini portions; Shazhi dissolves directly in hot water. You do not have to commit to a single flavour in advance and can discover all four varieties at your own pace.

What’s included

• Sticky Rice 2024: 10 mini tuocha at 6 g each, Sheng. An unusual Sheng with the fragrance of sticky rice, fresh vegetal notes and light fruitiness.
• Honey Ban Zhang 2024: 10 mini tuocha at 8 g each (80 g total), Sheng. Sweet and woody, with forest sweetness and subtle pinewood notes. A different character from the cereal-like Sticky Rice.
• Jin ke: 10 mini portions at 5 g each, Shou. Dark, earthy and woody, with gentle sweetness and a hint of caramel in the aroma.
• Shazhi: 10 soluble portions at 0.5 g each, Shou Pu-Erh extract. A concentrated tea extract with a sweet, woody profile and notes of sticky rice and vanilla. Not a mini tea cake: the portion dissolves completely in hot water.

Total: 195 g · 30 mini teas and 10 soluble extract portions. The portions differ in weight and yield. Leaf tea and concentrated extract cannot be directly compared gram for gram.

Understand Pu-Erh without any prior tea knowledge

Pu-Erh is tea from Yunnan, China. In this selection, you will discover two styles: Sheng often shows lighter vegetal, floral or fruity facets; due to its accelerated fermentation, Shou usually has a darker, earthy and woody character. Not every Pu-Erh tastes the same, and there are also clear differences within each style.

Your first tasting

Start with Jin ke if you would like to discover the dark, earthy Shou style. Then try Honey Ban Zhang and Sticky Rice as two different Shengs. Save Shazhi for comparison: how does the experience change when the tea dissolves completely rather than infusing as leaf tea?

How to prepare the teas

Jin ke: Rinse one mini portion (5 g) for about 5 seconds and discard the rinse water. Add 200–250 ml of water at 95 °C and infuse for 5–7 minutes. For a lighter flavour, infuse for less time. Drain completely afterwards; the leaves can be infused again.

Sticky Rice: Rinse one mini portion for about 5 seconds and discard the water. Add 200–250 ml of water at 90–95 °C and infuse for 2 minutes. For further infusions, add 30–60 seconds longer according to taste.

Honey Ban Zhang: Rinse one mini tuocha twice briefly with hot water, for about 5 seconds each time, and discard the water. Add 500–600 ml of water at 95 °C and infuse for 2 minutes. For further infusions, add 30–60 seconds longer according to taste.

Shazhi: Add one portion (0.5 g) to 150–200 ml of hot water at 90–95 °C. Stir occasionally and allow it to dissolve completely for 2–3 minutes. Do not rinse and do not use a tea strainer. Dilute with water if desired. Unlike leaf tea, the extract is dissolved rather than infused multiple times.

Ingredients and composition

Sticky Rice: Sheng Pu-Erh tea and leaves of the sticky rice plant (Semnostachya menglaensis). Honey Ban Zhang: Sheng Pu-Erh tea. Jin ke: Shou Pu-Erh tea. Shazhi: soluble extract from Shou Pu-Erh tea. The sticky rice aroma in Sticky Rice comes from the plant leaves, not from added rice grains.

Storage

Store the teas in a dry place, protected from light and moisture and away from strong odours. Keep the varieties separate in their respective packaging. This allows you to compare them deliberately later.

Frequently asked questions

Are these 40 tea bags?

No. You receive 30 pressed mini teas for infusing and 10 portions of soluble tea extract. Mini teas and extract are different formats; the box does not contain conventional tea bags.

What is Pu-Erh resin?

“Resin” here refers to concentrated, soluble tea extract. Shazhi is made from Pu-Erh leaves. Dissolve one portion directly in hot water; there are no leaves to strain afterwards.

Do I need a special teapot?

No. For the tea leaves, all you need is a heat-resistant cup or pot, a sufficiently large tea strainer and hot water. It is important to separate the finished infusion from the leaves. Tea ware and accessories are not included in the set.

Can I infuse Pu-Erh more than once?

The included leaf teas are suitable for multiple infusions. The flavour and intensity change each time. How many infusions you enjoy depends on the dosage, infusion time and your taste. Soluble extract is the exception.

Does Pu-Erh contain caffeine?

Yes, the Pu-Erh teas included contain caffeine. We do not provide an exact amount per cup, as this depends, among other things, on the variety, dosage and preparation. If you are sensitive to caffeine, start with a small amount.

What should I do if the tea tastes too strong?

Shorten the infusion time or use more water or less leaf tea for the next infusion. With Sheng, it is worth following the recommended water temperature. A bitter flavour does not automatically mean that you have prepared the tea incorrectly.
