Don’t just try them. Find your favourite.

Four teas, three whole cakes and a simple start: with this Pu-Erh set, you can compare mild, fruity-floral Sheng with dark, earthy Shou. The ten ready-made Jin-ke portions make getting started easy. The three 100 g cakes give you enough tea to try your favourites more than once.

Why this set?

Our recommendation if you want to really get to know Pu-Erh and drink it regularly. For €69, you receive 350 g of tea in four different varieties. You can change your brewing method, drink a tea on several days and discover which flavour suits you, rather than deciding after a single cup.

What’s included

  • Xi Gui Gu Shu 2021: 1 tea cake, 100 g, Sheng. Lively and herbal, with mandarin, pear and floral notes in the aroma. A delicate bitterness meets a sweet finish.
  • Le Qing Xiang Bingdao 2014: 1 tea cake, 100 g, Sheng. Aged, mild and gently sweet, with nutmeg and herbs in the flavour, as well as floral and fruity aromas.
  • Purple Beauty 2019: 1 tea cake, 100 g, Sheng. Honey-like sweetness, dried yellow plum and wild flowers. A fruity-floral Sheng from the Zi-Juan cultivar.
  • Jin ke: 10 mini portions, 5 g each, Shou. Dark, earthy and woody, with a delicate sweetness and a hint of caramel in the aroma.

Total: 350 g of tea. 4 varieties in a fixed selection. Unit price at the set price of €69.00: €197.14/kg.

Understand Pu-Erh without any tea knowledge

Pu-Erh is tea from Yunnan, China. In this selection, you’ll discover two styles: Sheng often shows lighter, vegetal, floral or fruity facets; due to its accelerated fermentation, Shou usually has a darker, earthy-woody character. Not every Pu-Erh tastes the same, and there are also clear differences within each style.

Your first tasting

Start with Jin ke and discover the dark, earthy side of Shou. Then try the mild Bingdao 2014, followed by the fruity-floral Purple Beauty, and finish with the livelier Xi Gui. This order is a starting guide, not a quality ranking. After each tea, make a note of what you like about the aroma, flavour and finish.

How to brew the teas

Carefully loosen a small portion from the edge of the cake. For the Sheng cakes included: 4 g per 300 ml of water at 85–90 °C. First, rinse for about 5 seconds and discard the rinse water. Then steep for 2 minutes and pour off the infusion completely. For subsequent infusions, steep for an additional 30–60 seconds each time, according to taste.

Jin ke: Rinse one mini portion, 5 g, for about 5 seconds and discard the rinse water. Add 200–250 ml of water at 95 °C and steep for 5–7 minutes. For a lighter flavour, steep for less time. Then pour off completely; the leaves can be infused again.

Ingredients and composition

Ingredients of all four teas: Pu-Erh tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). The set contains 300 g Sheng and 50 g Shou. Honey, plum, nutmeg and caramel describe flavour and aroma impressions; they are not added ingredients.

Storage

Store the teas in a dry place, protected from light and moisture and away from strong odours. Keep the varieties separately in their respective packaging. This way, you can compare them deliberately at a later date.

Frequently asked questions

Is this set suitable for beginners?

Yes, if you want to discover different Pu-Erh styles. Start with the ready-portioned Jin-ke minis. You can then use the guide to approach the Sheng cakes. The set contains mostly Sheng and is not exclusively a selection of dark, earthy teas.

What is a tea cake?

A tea cake consists of pressed tea leaves and is not a baked cake. You do not prepare the whole cake at once; instead, loosen a small amount from the edge each time. The remaining leaves stay in the packaging for later preparation.

How long will the set last?

At a calculated 5 g per preparation, 350 g provides approximately 70 preparations. This is a guide, not a fixed number of cups. Depending on the variety and desired intensity, you will use different amounts of tea; subsequent infusions of the same leaves are not included in this estimate.

Are honey, fruit or caramel added?

For the teas in this set, these terms describe tasting impressions. The ingredients are Pu-Erh tea leaves. The flavour notes mentioned are not added honey, fruit or caramel ingredients.

Do I need a special teapot?

No. A heat-resistant cup or pot, a sufficiently large tea strainer and hot water are enough for the tea leaves. It is important to separate the finished infusion from the leaves. Tea ware and accessories are not included in the set.

Does Pu-Erh contain caffeine?

Yes, the Pu-Erh teas included contain caffeine. We do not provide an exact amount per cup, as this depends, among other things, on the variety, quantity and preparation method. If you are sensitive to caffeine, start with a small amount.

What should I do if the tea tastes too strong?

Reduce the steeping time or use more water or fewer tea leaves for the next infusion. With Sheng, it is worth keeping to the recommended water temperature. A bitter flavour does not automatically mean that you have prepared the tea incorrectly.

Can I infuse the leaves several times?

Yes. The leaf teas included are suitable for multiple infusions. Pour off the finished tea completely each time and adjust the next steeping time to your taste.
